Accolade's day-to-day communication was scattered across group texts, email threads, and a Facebook group half the parents never joined. Backstage gives every theatre family one installable app for announcements, groups, photos, and messages, tied directly to show enrollment so nobody has to manage rosters or invite links.
Design Decisions
Built as a post-style bulletin board rather than a chat app. The first working version was real-time chat, but chat scrolls the important things away. Posts stay put with pins, reactions, and comments underneath, so a rehearsal schedule from Monday is still at the top on Friday.
Shipped as an installable progressive web app with its own icon, badge counts, and push notifications. Posts notify phones directly and send no email at all, because parents are drowning in email and announcements die there. No app store, no third-party platform, no ads.
Child safety is enforced in the database, not the interface. Kids have no access unless a parent turns it on per child, kids can never message other kids, and any conversation that includes a child automatically includes that child's parents. Membership flows from enrollment: joining a show puts a family in that show's group, and community groups sit behind staff approval.
